SEA (Search Engine Advertising)
What SEA is
SEA stands for Search Engine Advertising: the practice of paying to display ads in search engine results. When you search on Google and see labelled ads above or below the organic results, that is SEA in action, most often through Google Ads. Advertisers bid on keywords relevant to their business, and their ad can appear when someone searches those terms. The most common model is pay-per-click, meaning you pay only when someone actually clicks your ad.
How it works
SEA runs on an auction. For a given keyword, advertisers set a bid and create ads. When someone searches, the engine ranks competing ads using both the bid and a quality score that reflects how relevant and useful the ad and its landing page are. So the highest bidder does not automatically win: a more relevant ad can rank higher and pay less. You target by keywords, location, device, audience and schedule, and you measure results precisely, from clicks to conversions, adjusting spend toward what works.
SEA versus SEO
SEA and SEO both aim for search visibility but work differently. SEO (search engine optimization) earns unpaid, organic rankings by improving content and site quality; it takes time but the traffic is not paid per visit. SEA buys visibility instantly through ads; traffic starts the moment a campaign goes live but stops when you stop paying. SEO is a long-term asset, SEA is an on-demand tap. Used together, SEA can drive immediate traffic and test which keywords convert while SEO builds durable rankings for the same terms. Together they are often called SEM, search engine marketing.
Why SEA matters
SEA gives fast, measurable, highly targeted traffic. It is ideal for launching a product, promoting time-sensitive offers, or appearing instantly for competitive commercial keywords where ranking organically would take months. Because every click and conversion is tracked, budget can be steered toward what actually produces results. It also complements SEO by revealing which keywords convert, insight you can feed back into your organic content strategy.
Common mistakes
Frequent mistakes include sending paid clicks to a weak or generic landing page, bidding on broad keywords that attract irrelevant traffic, ignoring quality score so costs rise, and not tracking conversions so you optimise for clicks instead of results. Treating SEA as a substitute for SEO rather than a complement is another, since paid traffic disappears the moment the budget stops.
