What a domain name is
A domain name is the readable address people type to reach a website, for example bebranded.xyz. Computers actually locate each other with numeric IP addresses, which are hard to remember, so domain names act as a friendly layer on top. When someone enters your domain, the internet translates that name into the correct IP address and connects them to your server.
A domain name is not the same as a website or hosting. It is closer to a street address: it tells the network where to find you, but the building itself, the site and its files, lives on a hosting server. You lease the name rather than owning it outright, paying a yearly fee to keep the right to use it. If you stop paying, the name eventually returns to the market and someone else can register it, which is why a domain is best treated as a long term asset rather than a one time purchase.
The parts of a domain: TLD, registrar and DNS
A domain has structure. In example.com, com is the top level domain, or TLD, and example is the second level domain you choose. TLDs include generic ones like com, org and net, newer ones like xyz or io, and country codes like fr for France or es for Spain. The choice of TLD affects perception and sometimes regional trust.
A registrar is the accredited company that sells and manages domain registrations, for example when you buy a name for a year or more. Behind the scenes, the registry maintains the authoritative record of who holds each name within a TLD. The DNS, or Domain Name System, is the global directory that stores the records mapping your domain to servers, so browsers and mail can find the right destination.
How a domain resolves
Resolution is the process that turns a name into a connection. When a visitor requests your domain, their device asks a DNS resolver for the address. The resolver checks its cache, then queries the root servers, the TLD servers and finally your domain's authoritative name servers, which return the record pointing to your hosting IP.
The specific records matter. An A record points a domain to an IPv4 address, and an AAAA record to an IPv6 address. A CNAME aliases one name to another. MX records route email to the right mail servers, and TXT records hold verification and security data such as SPF and DKIM. Nameserver records decide which service controls all of this. Because resolvers cache answers, DNS changes are not instant: they propagate over minutes to hours depending on the record's time to live.
Choosing and buying a domain
Choosing a domain is a branding decision as much as a technical one. A good name is short, easy to say and spell, memorable, and free of confusing hyphens or numbers. It should match your brand and, ideally, be available across the TLDs and social handles you care about. Checking trademark conflicts before you commit avoids expensive problems later.
Buying is straightforward: you search availability at a registrar, register the name for a chosen number of years, and configure its DNS to point at your website and email. Enabling auto renewal protects you from accidental loss, and turning on privacy protection hides your personal contact details from public lookups where the TLD allows it. Keeping the registrar account secure, with a strong password and two factor authentication, matters because whoever controls the domain controls the brand's address.
Common pitfalls
The most damaging mistake is letting a domain expire. A lapsed domain can be snapped up by someone else and is sometimes hard or costly to recover, so auto renewal and a monitored billing email are essential. Losing access to the registrar account, or registering the domain under an employee's personal account, creates similar risk, because the person who holds the login effectively holds the brand's address.
Other frequent issues include misconfigured DNS records that break the site or email, forgetting that changes take time to propagate, and choosing a name that is hard to spell or too close to an existing brand. Making DNS edits during peak hours without accounting for caching can cause avoidable downtime, so timing and a low time to live before a change both help. Buying only one TLD and leaving obvious variants open can invite confusion or impersonation. Finally, neglecting email security records like SPF and DKIM leaves a domain more exposed to spoofing, which can quietly damage both deliverability and reputation.
